Before the snare broke

In Before the Snare Broke, Rosalinda Gonzalez turns the camera inward, constructing saturated environments in which reflection destabilizes the boundaries of the self. Bodies double and disappear. Cameras look back. Mirrors fracture space. Red light moves between seduction and warning, desire and danger, exposing an interior landscape that is simultaneously theatrical and psychological.

The photographs originate in a period preceding Gonzalez’s spiritual transformation and later encounter with Jesus. Viewed from the present, however, they resist becoming straightforward documents of a former life. Instead, they operate as fragments — images produced from within a condition that could not yet be fully perceived by the person inhabiting it.

Throughout the series, Gonzalez is both subject and observer. The visible camera produces a recursive gaze: the artist watches herself being watched, implicating the viewer in a cycle of looking, performance, recognition, and self-construction. These gestures draw upon contemporary cultures of image-making while reaching toward older questions surrounding the divided self, desire, captivity, and revelation.

The title comes from the image of a snare that has finally broken — but Gonzalez deliberately locates the photographs before that moment.

What remains is the tension of not yet knowing.

The series asks what captivity looks like when it has become familiar, pleasurable, fashionable, intimate, or even beautiful. Rather than identifying the snare for the viewer, Gonzalez leaves the reflective surface open, allowing the image to become a site of recognition.
